The World’s Most Expensive Dessert

January 9th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I was amazed and amused recently to see a news article about the “World’s Most Expensive Dessert.”

This chocolate sundae set a Guiness record, selling at $25,000. It’s called the “Frrozen Haute Chocolate,” and, no, that’s not a typo; it is frrozen with two Rs. It was developed by Stephen Bruce, owner of Serendipity 3 and luxury jeweler Euphoria New York.

Why was a jeweler involved, you ask? Well, the dessert has .2 ounces of edible 23 karat gold in it, for starters, it’s served in a goblet that’s lined with more edible gold, and it’s topped with whipped cream covered with even more gold. It is served with an 18-karat gold bracelet with 1 carat of white diamonds and a gold spoon decorated with white and chocolate-colored diamonds. (After all, you couldn’t expect someone to eat it with just any old spoon, could you?)

The dessert itself is concocted from a blend of 28 cocoas, which include 14 of the most expensive and exotic cocoas in the world. If that isn’t enough, it’s served with a side of “La Madeline au Truffle” (from Knipschildt Chocolatier,) which sells for a paltry $2,600 per pound. (I’ll take two pounds, please - not!)

Fascinating, isn’t it? Well, for those of us who have other things to do with our money, there’s always Gooey Spider Cake! This delicious, gooey, blend of chocolate and mint costs way less than $25,000 to make, and you don’t have to travel further than the grocery store to get the ingredients. The recipe is in the Original and Strictly Unofficial World of Warcraft Cookbook.

I saw this on food network…it looks amazing, and you get to keep the jewlery, goblet, and spoon when you’re done.
